Do’s
- Make sure to read the Connect OneView™ User Guide before you set up your system.
- Review all related application notes.
- Review the Budget Calculator when designing a Connect Spectra™ OT network and before installing it.
- Backup your system settings from OneView after all configuration has been completed (see 'Backup/Restore' section of this article). Repeat whenever changes are made after commissioning.
- When setting up a redundant Connect Spectra™ system, follow the redundancy guide explicitly. Any deviation will result in unwanted operation.
- Keep fiber ends capped at all times and only uncap them right before cleaning and inserting them into an ONS-SX-SFP or ONS-CX-SFP module.
- In OneView, add a description to all Edge Switches and ports. This will save you lots of time later when you're trying to quickly find the information you're looking for.
- Understand how to use VLANs and make sure to name and color-code them in OneView.
Don’ts
- Don’t leave your fiber uncapped ever. This is just asking for trouble. Uncapped fiber ends can get scratched badly enough that cleaning them will not help.
- Don’t operate your OneView system with the default password. Changing it should be one of the first things you do after logging into OneView for the first time.
- Don't leave your system on VLAN 1 (default). Groups of devices in your system should belong to a unique VLAN with an ID between 2 and 4092. Please refer to VLAN Modes Explained for more details.
- Don't plug in Edge Switches arbitrarily in a Connect Hybrid™ system. Carefully follow the Initial OneView Setup instructions for Hybrid.
Gotcha’s
- Google's Chrome web browser is the only web browser that is officially supported for use with OneView.
- When adding splitters to a Connect Spectra™ system, make sure to refer to the Budget Calculator. Otherwise there may not be enough light getting to the Edge Switches that are furthest from the ONS-S8 Aggregation Switch.
- If you're setting up a Connect Spectra™ system and you choose to connect an Edge Switch directly (i.e. without a splitter) to the ONS-SX-SFP plugged into one of your ONS-S8 Aggregation Switch's OPT ports, make sure to insert an optical attenuator (10dB is recommended) into the ONS-SX-SFP first. Otherwise there will be too much light getting to the Edge Switch and it will not register.
- Although the ONS-SX-SFP and ONS-CX-SFP modules look very similar, they are not interchangeable with each other. The ONS-SX-SFP only works with the ONS-S8 Aggregation Switch. The ONS-CX-SFP only works with Optigo Edge Switches. If these get mixed up, your system will experience serious communication problems.
- Make sure all cables are pre-tested and verified to be reliable before connecting devices. The majority of connection problems are due to bad cabling and not the active network components or the system.
