This article explains how to configure the ONS-C810p so that it can be managed without OneView™, as a standalone switch.
Although primarily designed to be connected to Optigo's ONS-S8 aggregation switch and managed from OneView™, the ONS-C810p can also be managed as a standalone switch with its built-in management interface.
Accessing the ONS-C810p Management Interface
- Set up your computer's network settings as follows:
IP Address = 192.168.255.100
Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0
Gateway = 192.168.255.1 - Connect your computer's Ethernet port to port 9 on the ONS-C810p.
- Launch Google's Chrome web browser and go to: http://192.168.255.254
- Log into your ONS-C810p switch with the following default credentials:
username = admin
password = password
Configuring Port VLAN Settings
The ONS-C810p's default switch management VLAN ID is 4093 and its default switch management port is 9. For ports 1 through 8 the default VLAN ID is 1 and the default VLAN mode is Access (untagged).
However, there are situations where you may want to change the VLAN settings on your ONS-C810p (please read VLAN Modes Explained for more info).
The default configuration provides tighter security, because the switch's management interface cannot be accessed by disconnecting a device from ports 1 through 8 and then connecting a computer in its place.
On the other hand, with this configuration you can’t communicate with connected devices and the switch management GUI from a single interface. To do this, both data and management would need to share the same VLAN ID.
Regardless of your particular application's VLAN requirements, the following examples will show you how to make the changes from the ONS-C810p management GUI.
IMPORTANT:
- If your ONS-C810p was previously part of a managed Connect system, reset it to default settings (hold down the reset button for 15 seconds) before configuring it as a standalone switch.
- Never change your management VLAN ID to one that does not exist on any of the Ethernet ports on your ONS-C810p.
- Always make sure that at least one Ethernet port on your ONS-C810p (any one of 1 through 9) has been assigned the management VLAN ID (default is 4093).
- If you decide to add your ONS-C810p to a managed Connect system at a later date, make sure to reset it to default settings first.
Segregating Traffic by VLAN
To segregate the traffic on your ONS-C810p by VLAN, there are 3 basic steps:
- Create a new VLAN ID, if it doesn't already exist on the switch.
- Change the PVID (Port VLAN Identifier) to the desired VLAN ID.
- Configure the ports as untagged on the desired VLAN.
For example, let's say you wanted to configure ports 1 through 4 as VLAN mode Access (untagged) with a VLAN ID of 100. In this setup, devices connected to ports 1, 2, 3, and 4 would be able to communicate with each other, but not with devices connected to ports on other VLANs.
This configuration would require the following steps:
- Go to the 802.1Q page and click the Add button on the right.
- Enter 100 in the VID field and then click on the Untagged Port field.
- Select radio buttons 1, 2, 3, and 4 in the untagged row and then click Confirm.
- Confirm that 1-4 is displayed in the Untagged Port field and then click the checkmark on the far right (i.e. Apply).
- Confirm that 100 is now listed in the VID column and that only untagged ports 1 through 4 have that VLAN ID.
- Click on the edit button in the VID 1 row.
- Remove ports 1 through 4 from VLAN ID 1 by selecting the radio buttons in the none row, then click Confirm.
- Confirm that the Untagged Port value in the VID 1 row changes from 1-12 to 5-12.
- Enter 100 in the PVID field at the top of the PVID page, check the check boxes for ports 1 through 4, and then scroll down to the bottom to click Apply.
- Confirm that ports 1 through 4 have been assigned PVID 100.
Accessing Management and Devices from a Single Interface
In order to be able to manage your ONS-C810p and see all of the devices connected to it, from a single interface (e.g. a PC), you need to set ports 1 to 9 all as Access (untagged) with the same VLAN ID.
For example, let's say you wanted ports 1 to 9 to all be configured as VLAN mode Access with a VLAN ID of 4093, and port 9 is already configured that way by default. In this setup, a PC connected to port 9 would be able to manage the ONS-C810p and connect to any devices plugged into ports 1 through 8.
This configuration would require the following steps:
- Click on the edit button in the VID 4093 row.
- Click on the Untagged Port field in the VID 4093 row.
- Select radio buttons 1 through 8 in the untagged row and then click Confirm.
- Confirm that 1-9 is displayed in the Untagged Port field and then click the checkmark on the far right (i.e. Apply).
- Click on the edit button in the VID 1 row.
- Remove ports 1 through 8 from VLAN ID 1 by selecting the radio buttons in the none row. Then click Confirm followed by the checkmark on the far right (i.e. Apply).
- Confirm that the Untagged Port value in the VID 1 row changes from 1-12 to 9-12.
- Enter 4093 in the PVID field at the top of the PVID page, check the check boxes for ports 1 through 8, and then scroll down to the bottom to click Apply.
- Confirm that ports 1 through 8 have been assigned PVID 4093.
